Coleman Powermate
What would make my colemans generator run too fast?
I have a powermate colmans generator it started running too fast it blow something up in my tv that was not on but was pluged in. If it was getting too much gas it would just flood out what could make it run too fast and what can I do?
There is a spring and lever arrangement on the side of the engine to control the throttle. The lever connects to a centrifugal wheel which spins from the crank shaft. As the engine speed increases the lever will reduce the throttle until the force from centrifugal weights on the wheel balance with the spring tension. When the engine is off the throttle is in full open position.
You likely have a problem with the spring tension or the entire mechanism has been bumped out of alignment. I have a small ColemanPowermate 1850 which had an internal failure and needed the governor wheel and lever replaced.
Start off with no load on the generator and let it warm up for about 5 minutes. Then slowly adjust the spring tension on the throttle lever to reduce the engine speed. At 3600RPM you should get close to 125VAC output at no load.
