Welding (solder) copper pipe to a copper fitting?

We had a busted water pipe this winter that ran to an outside faucet so we cut it and capped it. Now we are trying to fix it. We bought the pieces and I need to solder a copper fitting onto a copper pipe. I am having problems getting the solder to “stick” to the pipe what am I doing wrong?

You need to clean and sand the copper pipe. Then you must use a solder flux past on the copper pipe to prevent the copper from oxidizing when you heat it. Apply it with a small brush around the pipe end to be joined to the fitting. This will allow the solder to flow into the fitting. Also it is best to heat the fitting rather than the pipe as this will draw the solder up into the joint. If you can, solider your connection so the solder will flow down into the joint. Be careful not to put to much solder into the joint or if the threaded end is close to the soldered end it could flow into the threads and you will need to start over with a new fitting.
